A good Chinese porcelain Dutch-decorated rouleau vase c.1700

£3,000 - £5,000 £4,800

A good Chinese porcelain Dutch-decorated rouleau vase c.1700, the cylindrical body moulded with a formal allover lotus design, later-enamelled in Holland in the Kakiemon palette with a sinuous dragon above bamboo and prunus, the reverse with a crane in flight above a small floral spray, the rim with two stems of flowering peony, 26.8cm.

Provenance: the Helen Espir Collection, no. 828. Purchased from Law Fine Art, 30th January 2001, lot 173.

Illustrated: Helen Espir, European Decoration on Oriental Porcelain, p.80, pl.11.

While the palette and composition of this design tend to follow the Japanese closely, the addition of the red and gilt dragon lends more to the Chinese and is a slightly odd addition.
