A Chinese armorial small plate c.1750, decorated with the arms of Fitzroy, Duke of Grafton, above a scene of three Chinese figures holding fans and practising calligraphy in a garden, the rim enamelled in blue, gilt and puce, 16cm. Provenance: the Clifford Henderson collection. Purchased from Heirloom and Howard in 1983. This service was the first created for Augustus Henry, 3rd Duke of Grafton, great-grandson of King Charles II.
