Description

A rare George III Irish Freedom box and cover, engraved with the arms of The Corporation of Weavers, with the motto 'Nihil sine Labore', gilt interior, and engraved on the base the inscription 'The Corporation of Weavers unanimously present the Freedom of their Guild to the Right Honourable Arthur Earl of Arran for his eminent services to the silk manufacture of their Kingdom, Weavers Hall, Dublin 1st July 1766', by John Sherwin, Dublin, circa 1766, 3.2in (8cm) diameter, 4.3oz.* *As a point of interest, the engraver of this box, although being very skilled and accomplished, was either given rather late instructions regarding the spelling of the last word of the motto and the title of the box's recipient, or he had a well developed sense of humour!
