A large pearlware bull-baiting group, the massive beast tethered while a terrier snaps at his heels, the braying farmer with arms outstretched, calling people to the show from here, there and everywhere and holding a club in each fist, dwarfed by his hapless victim, all raised on a flat marbled base, c.1820-30, some restoration, 35cm.
Cf. Myrna Schkolne, People, Passions, Pastimes and Pleasures, pp.136-145 for various examples of these groups.
