Cooper Penrose was a significant Irish merchant of the late 18th Century, building much of his success on the manufacture of Waterford and Cork glass and involvement with family timber and property businesses. He and his wife were somewhat unconventional Quakers but also great lovers and patrons of the arts - filling their home, Woodhill House in Montenotte, Cork with Irish and Continental art. Many works from his collection were donated to the Crawford Art Gallery in Cork where it still resides
