A Renaissance style ivory table mirror, the octagonal bevelled plate to a frame carved with classical figures, with the motto 'PLUS ULTRA', the stem with an oval coat of arms, the base with a gilt panel of figure, the back with gilt appliqués of trailing foliage, masks and grotesques, 19th century, 12.75in (32cm) h, 3.75in (9.3cm) w. Plus Ultra is the national motto of Spain and was adopted from the personal motto of Charles V the Holy Roman Emperor.
