A rare Charles II provincial silver peg tankard,

by John Douthwaite, Newcastle circa 1675,

cylindrical form, the interior with five pegs, the hinged cover with a pomegranate thumb-piece, fluted scroll handle terminating in a shield cartouche, on three foliate capped pomegranate ball feet, the front engraved with an armorial within foliate mantling, height 19cm, approx. weight 23.4oz.

The arms are those of the descendants of the Revd. Thomas Thorp, sometime Vicar of Chillingham, Northumberland and Berwick on Tweed.
