Tribal Art & Antiquities

The February sale will include further Taiwanese artworks, including shell body ornaments, a shield and a rare Magamaog, representing the primordial deity of the Yami people. The Bob Wise Oceanic collection is represented with a selection of shields from Papua New Guinea and the surrounding islands, many of which were originally collected by the tribal art collector and adventurer Senta Taft. A small selection of Australian Aborigine shields, clubs and boomerangs from differing vendors show the wide range throughout the many tribes. Three bark paintings from Arnhem Land depict the deep respect shown between humans and animals, include a powerful portrait by David Yirawala of Kundaagi, the sacred kangaroo. An interesting Inuit needle case, carved in walrus ivory depicts four men sitting in a row with a polar bear at the back, illustrating skill, humour and again respect to the world around this particular carver. A good selection of African art includes figures, staffs, masks and textiles.

A small collection of Egyptian faience and wood shabtis are featured within the Antiquities along with a number of scarab amulets.
