Rare scagliola panels double estimate

A rare pair of mid 18th century Italian scagliola panels attributed to Don Enrico Hugford, have sold at Woolley and Wallis's furniture auction today for £39,000 (including buyer's premium). The panels significantly outperformed their pre-sale estimate of £15,000.  Scagliola is a technique used to imitate expensive marble inlays and is used in works of art, architectural features and floors. Don Enrico Hugford was born in Italy to English parents in 1695 and went on to become the leading master of the technique in Tuscany during the 18th century.
