Edo Women: Japanese Prints Exhibition 1820-1900

28th September 2026
Woolley & Wallis are proud to sponsor an exhibition titled Edo Women: Japanese Prints 1820–1900 at the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum from 24 October 2026 – 11 April 2027.

The exhibition will showcase a striking collection of 19th-century woodblock prints on generous loan from the personal collection of author and art historian Frank Milner, which were designed, hand‑printed and originally sold in the city of Edo (modern‑day Tokyo).

Together, they illuminate the lives of Japanese women across a transformative era in the nation’s history. From mythical creatures to samurai, from working women to the Empress of Japan, these works reveal the diverse roles and experiences of women during a time of profound social change as Japan moved away from its feudal past. Surrounded by the museum’s own historic Japanese collection, the exhibition is very much at home at the distinctive Russell-Cotes Museum; a must-see for art lovers and Japan enthusiasts.

Exhibition Events:

  • For an opportunity to learn more about Merton and Annie Russell-Cotes’ Japanese collection and how the Victorians became enchanted by Japanese art and design, there will be a Themed tour. A Victorian Vision of Japan held at the museum on Saturday 24th October at 2.30pm.
  • In addition, a Journey to Japan evening event will be held on Thursday 12th November from 6pm-8.30pm, offering the chance to explore the museum in the evening, get hands-on with museum objects and immerse yourself in the rich artistic and cultural heritage of Japan.
