Description
John Linnell (1792-1882) Harvest Time Signed and dated 1859 Oil on canvas 66 x 86cm; 26 x 34in Provenance: The Collection of Alderman James Dawson of Lytham St Annes and thence by descent. This panoramic landscape by Linnell is a view of the harvest on his Redstone Estate at Redhill. He records in his journal that in 1858 he started work on a kit kat size work titled Cornfield, Setting up the shocks which is almost certainly this picture. In the previous year he had spent several days sketching the harvest and these were used as the basis for this and other harvest scenes. The picture was sold to the Sheffield Dealer Henry Fitzpatrick who collected it in January 1859.
