Description

A George III naturalistic soup tureen and cover, of squat and shaped oblong outline with gadrooning, the sides enveloped in a reeded, celery like plant forming the handles and terminating in four rooting supports and ball feet, the stepped cover with a shaped well and central dome surmount by a large turnip finial, issuing four furled leaves, dropin liner and scratchweight '116-19', by J. Parker and Edward Wakelin, London, 1760-1770, maker's mark only, struck four times in all, 16in (41cm) wide overall, 116oz (excluding unmarked liner). Bearing: Engraved with the coat of arms of Robert D'Arcy, 8th Baron Conyers and 4th Earl of Holdernesse (1718-1778), the Fauconberg & Conyers inventory Nos.
