Description
A rare Prattware model of Napoleon, modelled as the Hartlepool Monkey, wearing an ochre coat, a bicorn hat inscribed with 'BONEY' and blowing a horn, a ring handle to his back, c.1812, some restoration, 15cm. Models of this type relate to the apocryphal story of an unfortunate monkey who washed up on a beach in Hartlepool during the Napoleonic Wars, was accused of being a French spy, was tried on this charge and subsequently hanged.
