Description

A Western Tibetan / Ladakh standing figure of Manjusri, holding a sword in his right hand, 11th / 13th century, 15.5cm. Provenance: Ernest Ohly Collection. Cf. von Schroeder, Indo-Tibetan Bronzes, p.176. Manjusri, is the oldest of the Bodhisattvas with many manifestations. He is the Bodhisattva of wisdom and is represented as a beautiful youth of golden yellow colour. In his right hand he has a sword which cuts through ignorance, a book, and in his left hand he has a stem of lotus blossom which bears a scripture, "perfection of wisdom". He is a popular deity and looked upon as the bringer of civilization to the Himalayas.
