Description

Carey (Henry, First Baron Hunsdon), Lord Chamberlain. Document signed, dated October 1, 1588, 1pp., folio, affirming the assessed rate of £5 in fee to Thomas Norris, one of the Messengers of Her Majesty's Chamber, signed by Hunsdon and Sir Thomas Heneage, Vice Chamberlain, fragment of seal, one or two tiny holes at the flourishes of Heneage's signature. Hunsdon's whose power had initially been enhanced by victory at Naworth in 1570, was then active as courtier and administrator, became Privy Councillor and was appointed as Lord Chamberlain in 1585. The office gave him an even more significant strategic political role, since it was to him that petitions for audience to the Queen must turn.
