Description
A fine presentation four piece 18 carat gold communion set, comprising a chalice, a flagon, a credence paten, and smaller paten, donated to The Church of St.Thomas, St. Anne's-on-the-Sea. In memory of Annie Barnes, 2nd September 1922.
Made by John Hunt of Preston, in conjunction with Messrs. Edward Barnard and Sons Limited, Hatton Garden London, the artist being Mr. Reginald J.Day, with 18 carat gold hallmarks for London 1923. The set is accompanied by a hand illustrated book by C.W.Norris, illuminator, London, describing all aspects of the set , with colour plates with gold leaf highlights. 'The service consists of four vessels wrought in gold from the Mysore Mine in India and each vessel bears the following inscription, 'To The Glory of God and in Loving Memeory of Annie Wife of John Barnes, 2nd September 1922'. The book continues,' The vessels are completely hand wrought, embody the work of the finest craftsmen, and are conceived and executed in the spirit of the best examples of Gothic Ecclesiastical Vessels of the late XVth and early XVIth centuries.'
The Chalice: with a shallow tapering bowl, engraved with the Latin inscription, ' Calicem Salutaris accipiam et nomine Domini invocabo', on a knopped stem and on a raised octagonal foot with scenes representing the Graces of our Lord, height 21cm.,approx. weight 34oz.,1055.9 grams.
The Flagon: of ovoid form, scroll handle, domed hinged cover with with open Gothic leaf work, the front chased with a panel depicting Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper.", engraved with the Latin inscription 'Pascha nostrum immolatus est Christus', height 31.5cm., approx. weight 53.5oz.,1663.7 grams, height 31.5cm.
The credence paten:circular form, on a raised octagonal foot, engraved with the Latin text, 'Hor corpus meum est quod pro vobis salue', diameter 20cm., approx. weight 23.5oz, 733.8 grams.
The smaller paten: of circular form, engraved 'Hor corpus meum est quod pro vobis datur', diamter 18.3cm., approx. weight 9.5oz., 272.4 grams.
in a fitted oak travelling case. Approx. total weight 120.5oz., 3,695.8 grams.
