Description
Two Delft dry drug jars, each painted with two peacocks standing either side of a fruit basket above an elaborate cartouche bearing the inscriptions 'PULV: TUBER SALEB' and 'LIQUIPODIUM', each marked for the Drie Klokken (Three Bells) factory, c.1760, minor damages, 18.3cm. (2)
Tuber Saleb is more commonly called Salep, or orchid root and amongst other uses was allegedly used by witches in their philtres - the fresh tuber promoted true love while a withered one was given to check wrong passions.
