Description
A delftware dry drug jar, painted in blue with the haloed head of Apollo between two peacocks above a cartouche bearing the inscription 'E:MITHRIDAT', last quarter 17th century, 18.5cm.
Mithridatum was a pharmaceutical preparation used as an antidote to poisons. Apollo is a key figure in the Apothecaries' Society coat of arms, hence his inclusion in drug jar decoration.
