Description
A small Chinese famille rose rectangular abstinence plaque, each side decorated with two characters, one side marked zhai jie in Chinese, the other with Manchu characters bolgomi karga, within stylized flowers on a lime green ground, probably 18th century, small chips, 5.3cm.
The characters on both sides mean 'to fast'. These plaques were worn by court ladies during periods of fasting or at other times to indicate abstinence to their husbands.
