Description

A Silver Prize Medal for Hoxton School [the Orphan Working School], c. 1760, Minerva stands between spread acanthus leaves, PRO MERITIS FERO, rev figures of Justice and Learning support shield engraved HOXTON, 32.5mm (Davis & Waters p. 249, 354, R2). Very fine and very rare. The style of the medal may, perhaps, owe something to the silver Vauxhall Garden Tickets whose designs have been attributed to Hogarth. The Orphan Working School, which still flourishes, was founded by the Rev. Edward Pickard and admitted the first children, 20 boys, in 1760.
