Description
The following three lots were part of a silver hoard discovered on the 5th DFebruary 1967, when an old house on the Breitenstrasse No.42 in Bad-Hersfeld was demolished. The hoard included twenty-three spoons, four beakers, a pipe-implement, and a silver-gilt tankard. It is likely that the silver was most probably hidden during the thirty years war (1618-1648) by the family Vonder Tann-von Haune.
A late 17th century German silver-gilt tankard,
unmarked, probably Augsburg circa 1590,
tapering circular form, embossed with three seascape scenes with mythical dolphins, within foliate scroll borders, caryatid scroll handle, the slightly domed cover with a lion finial, height 16.5cm, approx. weight 12oz.
