Description
* A Copenhagen figure of a man, holding a box containing a cat-like animal, a stick in his left hand, painted wave mark to the base, 18th century, 13.8cm.
This figure perhaps bears some relation to the origin of the phrase 'pig in a poke', where unsuspecting buyers were sold a wriggling piglet unseen in a box or bag, only to later discover they had bought a cat.
Provenance: from a distinguished private European collection.
