* A Vienna white-glazed fable group, of the Monkey and the Cat, the primate holding his feline companion towards the flames as she pulls out roasted chestnuts with her singed paw, impressed shield mark, mid 18th century, 10cm. The 17th century fable spawned the use of the term "cat's paw", referring to someone used by another to accomplish his own purposes. Provenance: from a distinguished private European collection.
