Description
A Georgian engraved oval silver Private Members' Club Ticket, c. 1780's, pseudo coat of arms with rustic heads and liveried supporters, motto on ribband, UPON MY HONOUR and QUID RIDES [so you may laugh], rev engraved initials, FH, 64 x 54mm. Very fine, pierced.
Perhaps connected with the wealthy tobacconist, Lundy Foot, for whom the Irish barrister and orator, John Philpot Curran (1750-1817), suggested the Latin motto QUID RIDES for his coach as it works in both Latin and English - a play on a 'quid' of tobacco.
