Description

A large Davenport dish from the William IV service c.1830, the centre painted with a patriotic spray of roses, thistles, leek and shamrock tied with a Union ribbon, the interior rim with floral reserves on a green ground hatched in gilt, printed factory mark, restored, 33cm across. This service was commissioned by the King for his Coronation Banquet; the incorporation of the symbolic flowers was a specific request of William IV and proved a worrying task for John Davenport. The service earned the factory their Royal commission.
