Russian Royal Family and British Military interest, a silver two handled presentation cup, by Asprey and Co, Birmingham 1913, circular form, scroll handles, central girdle, on a circular foot, inscribed with the regimental badge and 'Her Imperial Highness, The Grand Duchess George of Russia, from Lieut. Colonel S.C.Taylor and the Officers, Warrant Officers, non commissioned officers and soldiers, of the 15 Batt. Prince of Wales Own West Yorkshire Reg. in remembrance of her visit to the Battalion at Ripon on Sept. 10th 1915,' height 14cm, approx. weight 6.5oz. Grand Duchess George (1876-1940) was a great-granddaughter of Tsar Nicholas I and first cousin and confidant of the last Tar, Nicholas II. Her marriage to Grand Duke George of Russia (1863-1919) was an unhappy one. On the pretext of improving her daughter's health, on doctor's advice she left Russia with her daughters Nina and Xenia in July 1914 to stay in Harrogate, Yorkshire. Following the outbreak of World War I the following month they were never to return to Russia. He husband was killed with other members of his family on the 28th January 1919.
