Description

An early Victorian giltwood lady's writing table by C. Hindley & Sons, London, of kidney shape with replaced leather insets, the raised spindle back with a brass gallery above a husk and floret decorated frieze with a central drawer stamped 'C. Hindley & Sons, 134 Oxford St, London, 27181', on petal carved and fluted supports with a conforming stretcher shelf, on turned legs and brass castors, 39in (99cm) h, 42in (107cm) w, 23in (58.5cm) d. Charles Hindley & Sons, originally carpet, rug and floor-cloth manufacturers, acquired the business of Miles & Edwards in 1844, and subsequently stamped their furniture with their address as 134 Oxford St.
