Description
A Chinese armorial octagonal soup plate c.1780, decorated with the arms of Henley, Earl of Northington, painted with scattered flowers, butterflies and insects within two narrow bands of gilt leaves on a green ground, 23.7cm.
Provenance: the Clifford Henderson collection.
This service was made for the 2nd Earl of Northington and the bulk of the service can be traced from his ownership through the Scarsdale of Kedleston and Henry Ford II, to a private collection in Portugal, where it resides at present. This plate and a trencher salt in America are believed to be the only two pieces separate from the rest of the service.
