Description
A rare Chinese armorial two-handled bowl and cover c.1780, painted with the arms of Woodley of Beccles, Suffolk, within borders of pink scale and European flowers, 18.5cm. (2)
Provenance: the Clifford Henderson collection. Purchased from Heirloom and Howard in 2006.
This service is well documented and known to have been made for William Woodley, Governor of the Leeward Islands. It was previously erroneously thought to have been made for John Owles of Lowestoft; his sale in 1872 giving rise to the myth of 'Chinese Lowestoft'.
