Description

A curious multi-opening 'Whist Club' snuff box, of elongated oblong form, with rounded ends and reeded borders, one cover engraved with a splayed eagle crest, the box hinging in four places but only having a single gilt compartment for snuff, the reverse inscribed: 'The eagle emblem of our club you see Crowned and displayed marks Whist's regality Heads twain one body show how partners should Combine their efforts for the common good Sable and or, pourtray the varying score The wings outstretched, the spread when play is o're' The front of the box initialled 'G W C', presumably for a certain 'Whist Club', unmarked, probably Scottish, circa 1840, 3.45in (8.7cm), 3.5oz.
