Description

An American painted 'sleigh' seat, the brown ground with gilt highlights, the back painted a carriage scene with a milestone inscribed 'Barnstable 8m.,' with a house on a hill, signed CAHOON, with metal scroll supports to the spindle arm supports and panelled seat on pierced trestle legs and an 'X' stretcher, with a later squab cushion, 33.5in (85cm) h, 37.75in (96cm) w, 22in (56cm) d. Martha Cahoon (1905 - 1999) was the wife and business partner to Ralph Cahoon (1910 - 1982) whose naive style of painting are the basis of their final home in the village Cotuit, near Barnstable, Cape Cod, Massachucetts, now the Cahoon Museum of American Art.
