Description

A large Yixing vase 20th century, the rectangular section body incised and enamelled with a scene of buildings before a long palm-lined staircase, the reverse with a poem, 30cm. Provenance: the Arthur J Harris collection. The poem and illustrated scene represent the Long March of the Red Army, begun in 1934, which saw the beginning of the rise to power of Chairman Mao. Only a tenth of those who began the march were at its completion, some 8,000 miles and 370 days later. The landscape on the vase is probably that of the last camp in the northwest enclave of Shaanxi.
