Description
A tall Yixing teapot and cover late 19th century, for the Thai market, the rich brown body highly polished, fitted with a brass overhead handle, two character Gongju mark to the base, 21cm. (2)
Provenance: the Arthur J Harris collection.
The Gongju mark literally translates as 'Tribute Bureau' and has been thought in the past to relate to well crafted pots, possible given by the potter in lieu of taxes. However, there is no documentary evidence to support this theory.
