Description

A Fine Chinese Spinach-Green Jade Tripod Censer and Cover Qing dynasty, Qianlong Period 1736-95, 17cm across, 11cm high. The circular body carved with tiers of chrysanthemum petals, the border with a key fret band, the sides with flared handles, the three feet are fringed by further chrysanthemum patterns, the stone shading from spinach green to black. Provenance From a private Scottish collection, purchased from John Sparks Ltd in the 1950s. Catalogue Note For related censers of chrysanthemum design, cf. The Complete Treasures of the Palace Museum, Jadeware III, p.82 no.70, and M Wilson, Chinese Jades, p.45 no.44 for an example in the Victoria and Albert Museum. The piece was used in John Sparks Ltd's advert in The Connoisseur magazine, September 1949.
