Description
George III, Pattern or Trial Striking of the Crown, 1818, by Benedetto Pistrucci, struck without a collar on separate lead planchets with spreading flans, Obverse, laureate bust right, as currency type, toothed border, plain edge, on a 3.5mm flan, the reverse with graffiti date "OCT 17TH 1818" (cf Selig [Spink 131, 2 March, 1999] 1201), the surface flat and dull, good fine; Reverse, St. George slays the dragon, the legend around in Garter, HONI SOIT , as currency type, toothed border, plain edge, on a 3mm flan, 43.5mm, some scuffmarks, scratches and adjustment marks on outer edge, but very fine and seemingly struck from a polished die.
