During World War II Laura Knight and her husband Harold Knight closed their home in London and moved to the British Camp Hotel at Wynds Point near Malvern. It was here that this work was painted. The Knights had been introduced to Malvern in the 1920's by Sir Barry Jackson, a great friend of Laura Knight, who was living near the Hotel at this time. Several of her Imperial War Museum commissions were also completed here including her portrait of Corporal J.D.M. Pearson GC., WAAF, the first woman to be awarded the George Cross in the war.
