The Lioness Attacking the Horse of the Exeter Mail coach, near Salisbury

This dramatic painting depicts a scene where the 'Quicksilver' Royal Mail Coach was attacked outside the Pheasant Inn at the Winterslow Hut by a lioness escaped from a travelling menagerie. Passengers escaped into the Inn and the lioness was attacked by a large dog which it chased and killed before being caught by the keepers. It is reported that the post was only delayed by 45 minutes.
