An early Victorian Fox's Balance by William Wilton, Cornwall, brass and silvered with marked scale either side, with curved brass plaque inscribed FOX's Balance by Wilton, ST DAY Cornwall, fitted in a mahogany case with a rising glazed from the base with a drawer, with printed trade label to reverse W.WILTON, MATHEMATICAL Philosophical & Optical Instrument Maker, ST DAY CORNWALL..., with ivory handles, the reverse with a brass needle and ivory scale marked 30-0-30, 12in (30.5cm) h. Robert Were Fox (26 April 1789 - 25 July 1877) Fellow of the Royal Society was a British geologist, natural philosopher and inventor. He is known mainly for his work on the temperature of the earth and his construction of a compass to measure magnetic dip at sea.
