John Adams-Acton in 1858 was awarded a Gold Medal by the Royal Academy Schools and the prize was to study under John Gibson in Rome. Under the tutelage of Gibson he sculpted the portraits of many famous people on the Grand Tour in Rome and on his return to England in 1865 his reputation as a talented portraitist was established.
