Description

A Kuba wood pipe, the bowl carved as a head with diced coiffure with distinct shaping, scarifications to face and back of neck, interlaced design to the base, the shaft carved by a different hand, in relief an antelope head, the flared ribbed end with sun motif, and a horn mouthpiece, collection number 'H.1882' to mouthpiece and base of bowl, 21in (53cm) l. Probably Showa subtribe - attributed after a fine cup, probably by the same hand, collected by Torday 1907. Provenance: The John Hooper Collection, Christie's, 14th July 1976, lot 107. Acquired from Baptist Missionary Society, 1950.
