Description

A large and imposing Chinese hardwood six-poster canopy bed Jiazichuang probably second half 19th century, the rectangular frame with a woven mat seat supported by sturdy scroll legs with a shaped apron carved in relief with lingzhi and chilongs, the back and side railing panels, probably in zitan, carved with stylized dragons, bats and other auspicious things, the upper canopy set with matching reticulated panels, the timber dry and other minor damages, 231cm high x 215cm wide x 150cm deep. Provenance: purchased in China in 1960 or '61 by an Asian diplomat while in Beijing. For a related example dated to the 18th century, cf. Christie's, Hong Kong, 3rd December 2008, lot 2532.
