A pair of Savona albarelli early 18th century, of dumb-bell form, painted in blue and ochre with birds, trees and stylized leafy shapes, one titled 'Un: Apostolorum' the other ' Un: Di Contesa', some damages to the rims, 18.5cm. (2)
Ointment of the Apostles was so called because it contained twelve ingredients, and was used in the treatment of burns and ulcers, Contessa (sometimes called Comitissae) was named after the fifteenth century Contessa di Vadra, for whom it was prescribed.
