Description
An extremely rare Caughley shell-shaped dish c.1790-93, painted with a panel containing a tall ruined building overgrown with greenery, reserved on a ground of tiny stylized flower sprigs within a pink band border with a continuous oval design, a little wear and some chipping to the rim, 20cm.
This dish is ensuite to the previous lot and is from a previously unrecorded Caughley service, discussed at some length in an article by Chris Brown in the Caughley Society Newsletter of February 2011. Certain design elements and the overall palette used in the decoration of these dishes are reminiscent of those used in the Marquis of Donegal service, which was decorated by Chamberlains in Worcester in 1793, as evidenced by an invoice to the Marquis dated September of that year. The varying quality and boldness of the landscape panels would suggest painting by more than one hand.
