Description

A rare Chinese blue and white bowl six character Xuande mark and of the period 1426-35 painted below the rim, well potted and raised on a straight footrim, the exterior painted in soft tones of cobalt blue with a continuous leaf scroll issuing ten large lingzhi heads, the foot with a stylized ruyi-shaped scroll and a band of lappets, the rims with double line borders, 29cm.

Provenance: Sotheby's London, 2nd March 1971, lot 163, and Sotheby's London, 6th July 1976, lot 148.

Exhibited: Mittens Rike, Borås Art Museum, Borås, Sweden, 1985, cat. no. 202.

Cf. Oriental Ceramics, The World's Great Collections, Vol. 8, Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, Stockholm, no. 220, for an almost identical bowl formerly in the Holger Lauritzen Collection. And also The National Palace Museum, Taipei, Special Exhibition of Selected Hsuan-te Imperial Porcelains of the Ming Dynasty, Taipei, 1993, cat. no. 45, for two other closely related bowls.

This particular form of bowl was an innovation of the 15th century, and it has been suggested they perhaps served as brush washers for scholars, for playing dice, or for cricket fights.
