Description

A gem set enamel and gold pendant by René Lalique, of Russian influence, the lower section centred with a circular cabochon amethyst and with circular cut diamonds set to the scrolling enamel ground. Suspended from a conforming hinged upper section emblematic of the onion domed Cathedral form. The reverse pierced with daisies and scrolls. Surmounted by a stylised fleur de lys which can be seen on the front. Suspended from a gold chain of pierced oval links decorated with enamel and joined with plain and smaller links. Signed to the base of the lower section LALIQUE. With René Lalique's maker's mark stamped to the tongue of the chain clasp and additional French control marks. 9.5cm high.

The pendant demonstrates such a departure from the traditional natural influence, meaning it was possibly a special commission. The daisies on the front and back symbolic of purity and innocence.
