Madame de Grignon was the granddaughter of Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, Marquise de Sévigné (1626-1696) the French aristocrat and well known correspondent. Her letters to her daughter from 1671 to her death in 1696 were especially widely read and Madame de Grignon was instrumental in their publication in 1734/7 and 1754.
