Description
Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (French, 1827-1875). A portrait of Madame Defly, circular bronze relief plaque, indistinctly signed and dated '1863', pierced for suspension, 18.3cm diameter.
Madame Defly (1785-1875) was 'dame lectrice' to Princess Mathilde from 1856 to 1870.
Provenance: The collection of Ralph Holland (1917-2012), art historian.
