Description

An early 19th century carved bloodstone snuff box. Foliate engraved mounts. Applied with an enamel miniature portrait of the 6th Duke of Bedford, possibly by William Essex (1784? - 1869) and after Sir Thomas Lawrence. Applied with an internal oval gold plaque engraved John Duke of Bedford 1823. The box 6.9cm wide. The portrait 3.1cm x 2.8cm. Fitted leather case.

John Russell, 6th Duke of Bedford (1766 - 1839) was a Whig politician and served under Lord Grenville as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in the Ministry of All the Talents. His son, John Russell became Prime Minister. He had ten children with his wives The Hon. Georgiana Byng and Lady Georgiana Gordon. He is survived by the current and 15th Duke, Andrew Russell.
