Description

A Chinese pale celadon jade belthook 18th century, the terminal carved naturalistically as a horse's head, the shaft plain with a small monkey clinging to the end, the stone with brown-black striations, 9.2cm.

The horse, ma, carrying a monkey, hou, represents the wish to be conferred with high rank. Such a piece would have been given to an aspiring official.
