Description

A Chinese porcelain Dutch-decorated small bowl 1st half 18th century, originally with anhua decoration below a narrow hatched band in underglaze blue, the interior with a central flower spray and a further narrow border, later-enamelled with a continuous stag hunt scene, the unfortunate animal being chased by hounds and a single figure on horseback, a further figure blowing a horn and holding further hounds on a leash, the interior with a repeated vignette of a church, 11.2cm.

Provenance: the Helen Espir Collection, no.870. Purchased from Geoffrey Waters, October 2002.

Illustrated: Helen Espir, European Decoration on Oriental Porcelain, p.166, pl.16.

This bowl was probably decorated in the 1730s and shows a European version of a Stag Hunt scene known on Chinese porcelain. The church vignette and style of decoration is similar to that scene on the Music Party bowl in lot 318, and may be by the same hand.
